Super Bowl XLVI is destined to be an epic game as the rematch of the New England Patriots and New York Giants already has fans excited. Now we’re big fans of the Super Bowl Commercials but even we have to admit we might be watching the game more than the ads this year.

Last year, the NCAA signed an insane $10.8 billion TV contract with CBS to air March Madness basketball games. That’s a lot of money for a TV contract but also think about how much coin is dropped on those brackets. Mainly by me. And I never win. One day, one day.

The suits at the schools got rich but there’s the myth college sports are merely for the benefit of the athlete – who never sees a legitimate cent from his or her work. Notice I say ‘legitimate’…

It’s great news for us because we’re sports fans. In the NFL, our Titans are 3-1 despite being pegged in the preseason as not being a good team this year. But that’s because they stocked up on some good talent over the years from the college ranks.

Go Randall Cobb! Packers Win Opening NFL Game

Whew…back from out little time away and back at it just in time for the NFL season to kick in. The 2011 NFL season officially started Thursday night with the Packers and Saints playing in the kickoff game.

And what better way to celebrate the return of football than to have a local player break open the game.

Packers rookie Randall Cobb made an impressive debut for the Packers as their return man which included his first two professional touchdowns, including an NFL record-tying kickoff return.

The return was a thing of beauty as Cobb rolled off some Saints defenders and stayed on his feet to the surprise of everyone. He then bounced all the way to the end zone for a 108-yard TD return.

Cobb is a local favorite after playing high school ball in nearby Alcoa, Tennessee. Silly UT passed on his talents and he went to Kentucky before being drafted by the Packers this year.

Former UT Vol Chad Cunningham is trying for a job with the local Tennessee Titans for a position as punter. He has his work cut out for him if he wants to make it in the NFL but with a heads-up play like this he’s on the right track.

Or he could just change his last name to Colquitt and be set for life.

Cunningham has his punt blocked but quickly grabs the bouncing ball and makes a first down. Just like coach drew it up.

The Tennessee Titans are still awaiting word from running back Chris Johnson on whether the player and team can find a contract both sides can agree with. In the meantime, the Titans running game looks great. Well, as long as it’s not in the red zone.

And as the preseason continues we are keeping an eye on rookie QB Jake Locker, who threw a 29-yard completion to Jared Cook to the Rams 5-yard line on his first snap. Locker struggled a bit through the game with as many bad plays as good ones. But that’s OK, because he’s a rookie and this is preseason.

Jake Locker’s Shiba Inu rating for this week is skeptical, dropping from last weeks ‘high’.

The Titans looked sharp in their 2nd preseason game when the visited St. Louis but the struggles near the goal line are troubling. The Titans had to rely on their kicker for points instead of TDs from their running game and that cost them the game in the end as the Rams won the game with a field goal.

Hopefully, CJ will sign soon so that won’t be a problem.

VIDEO: Drunk Grandpa Grinds with Arizona State University Coeds

On Saturday Arizona State lost to the University of Oregon, 42-31. Despite the loss, it wasn’t all tears of defeat for the ASU fans.

Our friends at Guyism passed along a captivating video of an inebriated old man — who we assume is someone’s grandfather — grinding with a gaggle of ASU coeds in the parking lot outside Sun Devil Stadium.

Vols Drafted This Year in the NFL (and Free Agents)

Considering the clusterfluck that is the UT Vols football program over the last few years, several Vols found homes in the NFL via the draft last week. A few more signed on with clubs this week when the free agent market started.

The most notable move were the Kansas City Chiefs taking safety Eric Berry with the 5th pick. We expect Berry to have a great career in the NFL and just wished it were for a good team. Chiefs = yuck!

Also in the first round, DT Dan Williams slipped down the draft board to be chosen by the Arizona Cardinals with the 22nd pick. We expected the big guy to go a little higher but at least he didn’t end up in Oakland.

Overall, 6 players were drafted including a surprise pick by San Diego in the 5th round to take QB Jonathan Crompton. Talk about a project! But this is the team that drafted Ryan Leaf….

Sedin Twins Ridiculously Awesome Goal

The Vancouver Canucks Henrik and Daniel Sedin have reached NHL superstar status and are being labeled as the Telepathy Twins. The are also known for mirroring each others actions on the bench. Freaky!

Be sure to watch the slow-mo replay of this goal. It’s sick! Henrik Sedin flips a pass blindly between his legs to his brother, Daniel, who makes a crazy goal while he’s shooting from between his legs.

Twins can be kinda creepy but when they do stuff like this, it’s awesome.

Classy Google Super Bowl Commercial

For years, Google was enjoying the silence when it came to mainstream advertising on television. Google claimed for years that their products, not advertising, is what made them better than the competition.

Times have changed. If the New Orleans Saints (once the model of failure in the NFL) can reach and win the Super Bowl than why can’t Google run an ad on TV. Stranger things have happened….

If you’re only going to do it once, might as well be during the one time of year you have the most eyes on the Television set. The Google Super Bowl ad is called “Parisian Love” and was actually made and released online back in November as part of Google’s ‘Search Stories’ series of videos.

While most commercials are trying to tell a joke, Google is trying to tell a story.

Kia’s odd Super Bowl Commercial featured a crazy cast of odd creatures having fun around town. What stood out for us is the great Sock Monkey who grabs a jet ski and takes on the mechanical bull at a bar. Sock Monkey FTW!

Letterman-Oprah-Leno Super Bowl Ad FTW

One of the best [and most unexpected] moments of the Super Bowl Commercials was the short ad for David Letterman’s show featuring Dave, Oprah, and Jay Leno.

Yup. Jay “Big Jaw” Leno.

The trio of media Kingpins had us hitting the rewind on the DVR as Letterman broke out his Leno impersonation with Oprah sitting between them. It was classic not only because it was funny but also because it was straight out of nowhere.

Bud Light provide 4 funny Super Bowl Commercials this year and 2 of them had LOST twists. The first one about scientists and an Asteroid features Dr. Marvin Candle from the Dharma Initiative. The other one is more of a direct reference with a group of people stranded on an island with only their Bud Light to keep them alive.

Overall, the batch of ads were enjoyable. Nothing fantastic but enough to get a laugh out of them.

Denny’s aired a trio of quirky Super Bowl Commercials aimed at promoting a free Grand Slam breakfast this Tuesday from 6am to 2pm and a free Grand Slam breakfast on your birthday. The monotone dude announcing the deal we could do without. The chorus of screaming chickens realizing they must make a ton of eggs is awesome!

The other 2 commercials feature chickens freaking out and that made our day. We don’t have a Denny’s close to us so the deal doesn’t matter to us. We just love the chickens.

Griswolds new Super Bowl Hotel Hell Vacation mini-movie

During the Super Bowl commercials you’ll be seeing a new promotion featuring the Griswold’s from the great Vacation movies.

Before you get a little too excited about a new Vacation movie- [there is one, just not what you think] you should know that Clark and Ellen Griswold are back and on the road.

This time they are visiting their son but the movie is actually a promotion for Home Away, a property rental agency for your vacations. Think of it as one of those Time-share deals and instead of having to sit through a boring 30-minute lecture you get to watch the Griswold’s.

OK. That actually works. Good idea.

We love the Griswold’s.

So the movie is a mini-movie featuring the characters from Vacation. It runs 15 minutes [see below] and features Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo and a replica of the original Family Truckster. Ride along as The Griswold’s hit the road again. This time they’re on their way to see Rusty at his vacation rental. They stop at a hotel and typical Griswold madness ensues.
