Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has officially joined the 27 Club, a list of talented performers who passed away too early and all at the young age of 27. The list includes Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain. Well, not Kurt. He’s still alive.

For anyone that has ever read a story about Winehouse in the last 5 years you knew she struggled with substance abuse so the surprise isn’t so much there as sadness that she (or her friends) couldn’t help the singer kick the bad habits.

So we’re all guessing at this point it will be the drugs that did her in and it will be interesting to see the autopsy report.

Winehouse has as only two albums into her career but “Back to Black” album racked up about every award possible and helped make the soulful, bluesy style of her deep and sultry voice a hip item.

The years after “Back to Black” brought a very public decline. Her performances were erratic or much worse. She planned and canceled tours, went in and out of hospitals. Photos and videos showed her stumbling, bleeding and apparently taking drugs. With her boyfriend and then husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, who served jail time for attacking a pub landlord, Ms. Winehouse shared drug benders and never made it through rehab. The long, pathetic spectacle brought joy only to the jackals of the British tabloids, which sneered in big headlines at each new downturn.

But her self-destruction was a deep loss to listeners. Ms. Winehouse was no manufactured pop commodity. She was a genuine musician: one of the very small handful of British singers whose version of American soul music had a gutsiness and flair far beyond what could be studied.

It’s not the the Rapture is here. How does that effect the majority of the world that aren’t Christians? Probably like this.

It’s a sad weekend because one of the childhood heroes of Dave and Thomas passed away this weekend. WWF Superstar “Macho Man” Randy Savage died in a car crash this weekend in Florida. Back in the day the WWF was fun and crazy and only girlie boys were fans of the Hulkster. We all know that the real men cheered on the Macho Man!

It’s a sad world with the Macho Man today and although we may never really replace the flamboyant entertainer/bad-ass we can all hope that the big guy is in a huge ladder match in the sky right now.

With the loss of one of the most awesome people ever to strap on leather boots we would like to dedicate this post to the Macho Man and play him off with one of our favorite clips. Here’s the big guy all geeked out and talking like only he can about one of his opponents.

But what most of us know Nielsen for is his entrance into comedy films after stealing many scenes in the goofy 1980 comedy “Airplane!” which is easily one of the most quoted films I have ever seen. Nielsen’s ability to deliver comedic lines with a deadpan face helped him win over a new group of fans.

“Airplanes”creators Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker wisely chose Nielsen for their next big project, the “Naked Gun” series. It started first as a little seen TV series and evolved into a film franchise that made Leslie Nielsen a household name as a lead actor in comedy films. He spent most of the 90′s making parody movies in the same manner of the “Naked Gun” series.

Comedic actor Leslie Nielsen, best known as the star of such comedies as “Airplane” and the “Naked Gun” franchise, has died. The Canadian native was 84. His death was confirmed by his nephew Doug Nielsen, who told the Canadian radio station CJOB he passed away in a Ft. Lauderdale hospital on Sunday from complications of pneumonia.

Nielsen is perhaps best known for his role as the bumbling police officer Lt. Frank Drebin in the “Naked Gun” series, a part that came to Nielsen after 35 years as an actor and roughly 1,500 appearances in various films and television shows.

Actor Robert Culp, best known for his role as an international tennis star and globe-trotting secret agent in the hit 1960s television series “I Spy,” died Wednesday morning after a fall at his Hollywood home, authorities said.

The 79-year-old actor was rushed to Queen of Angels hospital shortly after 11 a.m. after hitting his head while taking a walk outside his home in the 1800 block of El Cerrito Place, said LAPD Lt. Bob Binder. He was found by a jogger who called 911, and paramedics, patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. A preliminary investigation found “that his death is accidental and there appears to be no sign of foul play,” Binder said. An autopsy by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office is pending.

That is one of our favorite lines in any movie. More specifically it’s mentioned by the usually serious actor Peter Graves in the 1980 movie “Airplane.”

That crazy movie is full of great quotes ranging from Leslie Nelson’s “Don’t call me Shirley” to the jive talk of June Cleaver.

Sadly, the captain of that crazy Airplane, Peter Graves, has passed away. The stoic actor and voice-over talent was known for his many roles on television including the original “Mission: Impossible” and the more modern A&E series “Biography.”

Peter Graves, the cool spymaster of television’s “Mission: Impossible” and the dignified host of the “Biography” series, who successfully spoofed his own gravitas in the “Airplane!” movie farces, died on Sunday. He was 83.

He died of a heart attack at his home in Pacific Palisades, Calif., said Fred Barman, his business manager.

It was a testament to Mr. Graves’s earnest, unhammy ability to make fun of himself that after decades of playing square he-men and straitlaced authority figures, he was perhaps best known to younger audiences for a deadpan line in “Airplane!” (“Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?”) and one from a memorable Geico car insurance commercial (“I was one lucky woman”). (…continue reading…)

Sad news from Hollywood this morning as 80′s teen idol Corey Haim was reported dead of an overdose of drugs by the LAPD. The actor has had trouble with drugs in the past but this is the headline we expected in the early 90′s and not when the guy was closing in on the age of 40.

Corey Haim shot to fame in the 80s when he co-starred in a number of films, including “The Lost Boys,” with the other Corey, Corey Feldman.

The actor, who has struggled with drug addiction, was pronounced dead at Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank.

Police were called to the hospital just before 4 a.m. to investigate his death.

Police sources told CBS Haim’s death appeared accidental. Haim has been in and out of rehab and starred in a reality show with Feldman in 2007 called “The Two Coreys.”

He talked about his struggle with drugs – specificially prescription drugs.

“I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day – the doctors could not believe I was taking that much,” he told a reporter in 2007. (….continue reading….)

Throughout the years, O’Bannon had worked with such greats like George Lucas and John Carpenter. His attempts to create a cinematic version of the Dune novels, which failed, led O’Bannon to team up with Ronald Shusett to write and create a world of parasitic pests in Alien which led to multiple sequels.

Besides the epic Alien, O’Bannon also wrote such movies as Blue Thunder, Lifeforce, The Return of the Living Dead [writer & director, Invaders from Mars, Total Recall, and Screamers.

[Via NY Times] “I love gore films and I grew up with ’50s monster movies,” Mr. O’Bannon told the journal Cinefantastique in 1979, speaking of the film’s origins. “The idea for the monster in ‘Alien’ originally came from a stomach ache I had.”

In 1985 Mr. O’Bannon wrote and directed “The Return of the Living Dead,” part homage to the George Romero zombie film “Night of the Living dead” and part genre spoof. In 1990 he teamed with Mr. Shusett again, among others, to write “Total Recall,” a violent, futuristic tale set partly on Earth and partly on Mars and based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. It starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone.

Actor Patrick Swayze, who went from Broadway dancer to Hollywood star in box-office hits like “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” died on Monday, U.S. media reports said. He was 57.

Swayze, whose spokesman announced in March 2008 that the actor had pancreatic cancer, died at home with his family at his side, ABC News reported, citing his spokeswoman Annett Wolf.

The Texas native began his career as a dancer and made dozens of stage, film and TV appearances over four decades. Pop culture immortality came with 1987′s “Dirty Dancing,” which defied Hollywood expectations to become one of the most-watched movies of all time.

John Hughes only directed 8 movies in his lifetime but is credited with 34 writing efforts including “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and “Mr. Mom.” The pop culture impact by Hughes is tremendous. His movies started the careers of many of the 80′s biggest teen actors.

Here’s a look back at our Top 5 Favorite John Hughes movies.

Breakfast Club

A Brain. A Beauty. A Jock. A Rebel. A Recluse.

Five completely different high school kids are sentenced to detention on a Saturday and have a coming-of-age experience. “Breakfast Club” is one of Hughes more serious and personal films most considering it came after the comedy hit “Sixteen Candles.”

We saw this movie while in grade school and got to believe that high school would be filled with similar stereotypes from the movie. We were right. They were all there.

Uncle Buck

Everyone seems to have that crazy Uncle in their family. We love “Uncle Buck” because Uncle Buck’s one of us.

John Candy is Buck in this heavily [no pun intended] underrated flick that Hughes wrote and directed which has Candy in one of his first major staring roles. “Summer Rental” doesn’t count.

Also of note is the first time Hughes and Macaulay Culkin teamed up before making “Home Alone” which was written and produced by Hughes.

National Lampoon’s Vacation

Younger kids might not remember but there was a time when Chevy Chase’s poop didn’t stink. At the height of his popularity Chase was in some great comedy movies which peaked with the classic “Vacation.”

Hughes wrote the movie which was directed by Harold Ramis and the franchise spawned 4 sequels over the years.

We love “Vacation” because Hughes had a finger on the pulse of suburban America like no one else and no other movie pegged the miserable experience of a cross-country road trip like the Griswold’s trip to Wally World.

Sixteen Candles

This classic is Hughes first breakout comedy hit which started the teen coming-of-age trend which fueled the 80′s movie industry. “Sixteen Candles” helped start Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall careers and made everyone think that a girls 16th B-day was the single most important day ever.

We love “Sixteen Candles” not for the teen angst of Molly Ringwald but rather for great characters like Michael Hall’s “The Geek” or “Ted the Farmer.” Whatever you want to call him.

Also of note, a young John Cusack plays a nerd and his sister is Joan makes an appearance. But for our money we love the Donger! The Donger needs food!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

This slacker movie defined our generation as well as a TV series based on the movie staring Jennifer Aniston, tons of fan created movie trailers, a Fight Club based theory on alternative realities, an alt-rock band [Save Ferris] and the comedic career of Ben Stein.

The music also introduced kids to the Beatles [Twist and Shout] and Wayne Newton [Danke Schoen] as well as peppered pop culture with great quotes.
