V Is Good, And You Should Watch

v-seriesWe love sci-fi and both of us were excited to hear about the remake of the super “V” mini-series by ABC.  Then came the rumors.  There was talk about the show going on hiatus before it even aired.  There were doubts also when producers and writers were being shuffled.

All the rumors aside, the future of “V” is looking good.  The epic mini-series of the 80’s scored huge in the ratings with it’s pilot episode this week and ABC will air 3 more before the hiatus.  Then the show is scheduled to appear after the Winter Olympics and we’re guessing it will be paired up with “Lost” for it’s final season to milk the ratings even more.

All of this without the benefit of having Marc Singer in the lineup.

io9 takes a look at why the show will succeed and why you should watch it.

ABC Brings Back V TV Series

One of the best things about TV growing up in the 80’s was the lost art of the Mini-series. These short run series were too long to be a movie and not quite long enough to be a regular series.

They ranged anywhere from a Columbo mystery to a Meredith Baxter-Birney show, but we believe they hit the pinnacle of success with the epic Marc Singer led sci-fi mini-series, “V.”

Excuse me, are those Bugle Boy Jeans?

Excuse me, are those Bugle Boy Jeans?

This epic battle of Nazi-inspired aliens baddies vs a rag-tag team of rebels was capped by great moments like eating live hamsters, faces pealing off to reveal alien skin, and green alien-human hybrid babies.

Essentially, it was simply the most beautiful thing we had ever seen. Here are the opening credits in all their keyboard glory! And Yes, that is Freddy Krueger in the cast.

The equally diverse cast of V (2009)

That’s why we were skeptical when we heard that the ABC Network was revamping “V.”  Usually things like this turn out bad but with the recent success of Sci-Fi’s SyFy’s “Battlestar Galactica” we held out hope for a nice re-imagining.

In all honesty, we expect a lot from this version of “V” since they can now afford special effects.  That’s pretty much the requirement of us right now. They do of course loose points for not bringing back Marc Singer but we’ll live.

ABC will air four episodes of “V” in November 2009, and the series will resume in March 2010 after the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The only real downside is a lack of a strong cast for “V.” That and not having Marc Singer back. OK. We said we were fine with it before but now we’re getting sad….

ABC, obviously influenced by the great “Lost” series, chose Elizabeth Mitchell from that show and Scott Wolf, the other dude from “Party of Five,” the show that gave us “Lost” ring leader Matthew Fox. Joel Gretsch also stars and should be familiar with the writers and producers of “V” since they are the same people from his other TV show, “4400″

Looking back now on “Lost” when it began they didn’t have much of a cast, either. It as just ‘that’ dude from “Party of Five” and a hobbit.

My, how things change.

Thanks for bearing with us on this long 80’s reflection. Your reward is the first 8 minutes of ABC’s “V.” Hope you enjoy.

Balloon Boy Wife Swap Rap Video

For a few hours this afternoon we were all treated to an oddly compelling story of a boy and his balloon. We remember as kids have been forced to watch some crappy French film about a boy following a big red balloon around the streets of Paris. This is kinda like that.

Well, maybe it’s more like that episode of “The Simpson’s” where Bart pretended to be down a well and the world united together in song and charity to help Bart out only to find him hiding nearby.

Balloon Boy, as he will forever be known, is a 6-year old boy from Colorado who was thought to be stowed away on his father’s experimental balloon filled with helium. The balloon soared to heights of 10,000 ft and went across 2 counties in a 2-hour flight as the world watched and wondered if the boy was still alive.

It turns out the boy, named Falcon [seriously], was hiding in the attic.

Later it turns out that the father, a Martian-loving conspiracy theorist, was part of the 100th episode of ABC’s “Wife Swap. This whole ordeal is going to make a great movie one day!

And then there’s the music video. This video [supposedly] of the Henne boys is a lewd rap song that only makes the whole story sweeter.
