Graphic Novels and Hollywood Movies

Barry Caine of InsideBayArea.com has written an article depicting the status of the current Graphic Novel in today’s comic world. The article depicts the need for a good story and storyteller for a Graphic Novel to make the transition to the silver screen. There are a number of movies that have made the transition that most viewers never knew were a comic or Graphic Novel to begin with. “The Road to Perdition” and “From Hell” are two notable tales that have made the leap to Hollywood. One good way to see Graphic Novels are as storyboards to an unmade movie.

Watchmen Movie

efavata.com has a good link on the current status of ‘The Watchmen’. Currently, Paramount Pictures holds the movie rights to the graphic novel, but the script has been tossed around so much no one knows what’s going on. Type in the movies website, watchmenmovie.com and you just get redirected toward Paramount’s website. The movie’s been in development for years now, and they complain they can’t get a good script going. Last time I checked, the book itself can be used as a fancy storyboard for the writers, should they need inspiration. But, that’s just me.

Friday brings the latest adaptation of an Alan Moore Graphic Novel to the big screen. The story itself is over 20 years old and is a political response to the regime of Margaret Thatcher. Now, Andy and Larry Wachowski (The Matrix) have injected modern politics and world events to update the story for today’s audience. While ‘V’ is not as famous as Moore’s ‘The Watchmen’, if you have not had a chance to read either one, now is a good time.
