It’s no f***ing secret that famed comedy director, Edgar Wright(Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), has been toying with the possibility of assembling a movie based on f***ing Ant-Man, one of Marvel’s lower ranks on the comic book movie roster. Why did it take so long to bring “Ant-Man” to theaters? One reason… Ant-Man kind of f***ing blows, and Marvel has used up almost every other weapon in their arsenal to cash in on movie adaptations.
Marvel: “Hmm… what else do we have left to make?”
Jon Favreau: “Well… you haven’t made… uhm… uhm… Ant-Man?”
Marvel: “Holy F***ing Shit, Jon! You’re right! How did you think of that? We forgot about Ant-Man!”
Jon Favreau: “Easy. I shrink my size and gain it back at will, every month, like Oprah. I immediately thought of muther-f***ing Ant-Man.”

Marvel’s most recent attempt, “Iron Man”, has proven a f***ing cash cow, and is quickly becoming one of the most critically-acclaimed f***ing franchises in comic book movie history. I, for one, am hoping “Ant-Man” does the opposite. Please! God, give us another f***ing movie we can just laugh at for all the wrong reasons at a midnight drive-in. I can’t wait for “Ant-Man” to take itself so f***ing seriously that people are choking on their f***ing Red Vines in the theater, trying to contain laughter. What a dumb f***ing concept.
If you’re not familiar with the Ant-Man origin, then you’re one of the lucky ones. Scientist, Hank Pym, finds a way to alter the f***ing molecules in his body, giving him the ability to alter his size. You would think he would use this new found ability to expand his size, making him larger.
Nope! He thinks it’s a better idea to shrink himself to the size of a f***ing ant. See, that way, instead of stepping on ants, he can be eaten by them! What an awesome f***ing superpower, right?
Honestly, I’m looking forward to “Ant-Man” more so than any other superhero movie in the past. It’s so f***ing stupid and laughable, it might just be the most entertaining comic book movie of all time… aside from “Howard the F***ing Duck”… which is a f***ing masterpiece!
You can tell I’m f***ing kidding… right?

Well, it looks like fans of Joss Whedon’s Firefly will finally be getting their dream of all new episodes to drool over fulfilled. The SyFy Channel announced this morning that it has acquired the rights to the space western and will be working with Whedon to bring new episodes of the cult favorite back to the small screen as early as late 2012.

Initial rumor is that the story line will be a prequel. Whether this means it will take place before the events of the previous episodes or if it will just predate the Serenity movie is still unclear.

This of course brings up many questions, foremost among them being which cast members will be returning, who will be replaced, and who will be written out?

Well, it already looks like Nathan Fillion will not be returning due to previous commitments with his series Castle on ABC. The rumor is that SyFy has already reached out to a few actors about the possibility of stepping in to the roll of Captain Mal, with Mr. Dawson’s Creek himself, James Van Der Beek apparently being one of the names on that list. Just imagine, Dawson in space.

"Shiny!"

As for the fate of the rest of the cast and characters, it’s still up in the air. Some actors/actresses already have other gigs going like Fillion. Morena Baccarin aka Inara is currently on V, Adam Baldwin aka Jayne has Chuck (although that just about gets canceled every year) and Alan Tudyk aka Wash seems to have a pretty healthy film career going right now. Add on top of that the fact that the new story line may happen before characters such as Simon, River and Shepherd Book were even introduced and you have so many rumors already starting to fly about the show that it starts to get confusing.

So will the show be as good as the original? Still too early to tell, but with the potential cast and character changes, it could get a little scary, but hey, at least there will be new episodes. For those who crave more of the original cast, check out the Science Channel, who’s currently airing those episodes. As for developments on the new episodes, we will keep an ear out and let you know more details as we hear them.

In case you missed it, and we don’t blame you if you did, the Grammy Awards were on last night. It was pretty much what you expect from the Grammys by now; stars came and went, awards were given, singers sang, performers performed, and the music industry talked about how great they were.

Then Cee Lo took the stage and things got awesome. And by awesome we mean really weird.

Performing “Forget You”, the radio safe version of his hit “F**k You”, Cee Lo channeled his best Elton John as Big Bird, donning a bright feathery outfit, and bringing in an acid induced version of a Sesame Street back up band. It was the most memorable of any Grammy performance we’ve ever seen. And by memorable, we do mean awesome.

Oh yeah, and Gwyneth Paltrow was there.

We’re beginning to think Cee Lo may actually be Crazy.

If you actually care about the whole who won what thing, check out the list of winners below. For any more information, check out the Grammy Awards website.

After Twentieth Century Fox brought in Brett Ratner to kill off the X-Men franchise a few years ago, we did our due diligence. We showed up at the theater for X-Men: Last Stand. We suffered through the service, paid our respects and left thinking, after that, we wouldn’t be seeing the X-Men again.

But it made money. So it couldn’t die.

So then we got the not quite an X-Men film, Wolverine: Origins. So we went back to the theater to be assaulted by lots of explosions, lots of action, a cliche story, Liev Schreiber doing a shorter but still pretty cool Sabertooth, and the producers/writers wiping their collective asses with the source material (really!!!?? Deadpool!!??). So we left the theater with mixed feelings, but mainly anger. Anger and the flimsy hope that if they were going to keep doing these things, they would at least take the time to do them right.

Which brings us to the present and X-Men: First Class. It’s a prequel/reboot taking the story back to the early days of mutants in the 60′s, when Professor Xavier and Magneto were friends and just starting the School for Gifted Youngsters. They have brought in Matthew Vaughn of “Kick Ass” fame to help breathe some life into the production.

Will it be better than the last two? That remains to be seen, but the new trailer doesn’t seem to have that cheesy, over the top feeling we got from the previous two films, so here’s hoping. Check it out and let us know what you think

Around about 2004(ish) Warner Bros turned their attention to a DC Comics property they owned that had fallen into disrepair. So they hired a talented new director to come in and rework the property. You know; shore up the supports, add another story or two, maybe throw on a few coats of paint, really give it a nice polish and hopefully inject some new life to the series.

Well it worked. That movie was of course Batman Begins, which eventually led to The Dark Knight, and I believe most people have heard how that worked out for the studio, lotsa money for everyone, pats on the shoulders all around.

About the same time they had started reworking the Batman series, repairing the damage from the Schumacher years, they remembered they had yet another property in the DC district of Superhero Land that had sat vacant for many years. So following the same MO, Bryan Singer, fresh off his stint with the X-Men, was brought in to fix up the Superman franchise; the House that Christopher Reeve built.

Well, that turned out kinda anemic. Not a lot of money, very few pats on the back.

But not being ones to give up on a franchise, no matter how old, Warner Bros. is having another go around with the Man of Steel. Their plan? Bring in a new talented director to inject some life into the series and hire the people who made Batman successful as producers/writers on the film to make sure he does it. The director in this case will be Mr. 300 himself, Zach Snyder, and he will be joined by The Dark Knight‘s director, Christopher Nolan as producer with David Goyer writing the script.

If any team should be able to resurrect a franchise, you would think this is it. Goyer’s great storytelling, Snyder’s visual style, and Nolan’s golden touch; cause let’s face it, he’s been on a roll with that whole batman and inception thing. The only thing I could see tripping the project up is the source material itself.

I’ve always kinda of thought of Superman a kind of a blah movie superhero. Or more precisely, I think maybe he’s a little too super. I mean he’s a nigh invulnerable superbeing who always seems to be reduced to battling Lex Luthor, Kryptonite or some combination of the two in his movies. It gets a little tiring.

I’m not necessarily advocating the next film be a Luther free movie, but a Luther-light film would definitely be nice. Maybe something in the vein of Superman II, Luther hanging around but giving one of Superman’s many villains from the comic book series a shot on the big screen.

So far Snyder has been quoted as saying:

“the film will focus on the early days of Superman, so there will be no links to the other movies. This is not a remake then. Similarly, although I still can not talk about the script, I can assure you that this new Superman will not be based on any particular comic book story.” [via]

It will be interesting to see who the major players will be in the story this time out and who will be playing them. There are a lot of rumors flying around out right now, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear something.

There have been talks of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series moving beyond the print realm for years, but the question has always been, should it be a trilogy of movies or a TV series? Well NBC Universal made it official yesterday and answered our Movie/TV question. That answer was “Yes”.

It seems that NBC Universal will take an interesting approach handling a source material that spans seven novels and a series of comic books, by stretching the story across multiple media platforms. The plan is for a trilogy of movies and a television series, with the first film in the trilogy to be immediately followed by a television series that will bridge the second film. After the second film, the television series will pick up allowing viewers to explore the adventures of
the protagonist as a young man as a bridge to the third film and beyond.

Ron Howard, aka Little Opie Taylor, is set to direct both the first film and first season of the TV series. Howard will also act as producer for the series, teaming with fellow industry stalwarts Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer. For more on the details, check out the press release.

It’s an interesting strategy and we’ll be looking forward to see how it all comes together. NBC Universal will be investing a lot in this series so let’s hope they do it right, we’d hate to see them cock up such a cool series.

Do you remember that catoon from the 80′s about the little blue creatures that were three apples high, called The Smurfs?

Yeah, we do to. Man, we loved that cartoon when we were kids.

Did you ever wonder what would happen if the Smurfs were let loose in the city of New York?

Neither did we. But Columbia Pictures is betting that you will want to find out next year, because that’s the basic idea behind their new Smurfs movie.

You can get a taste of the new Smurfs film by checking out the teaser they’ve just released. There are actually hardly any smurfs in the teaser, but it does have Neil Patrick Harris introducing it and that’s something at least. And although the teaser is now out, the film is not slated to hit theaters until August 2011, so if it does tickle your fancy, you still have over a year to wait. Ain’t that just smurfy!

There were people presenting awards, people accepting awards, musicians performing music, Christina Aguilera making noise, Aziz Ansari telling jokes, a few skits ranging from awkward to amusing, women kissing women, men kissing men, a lot of Twilight, a whole lot of fucks (some bleeped, some missed), some highs, some lows, but mostly a lot of “meh”.

Congrats to Zach Galifianakis and Kim Jeong who won the Best Comedic Performance and Best WTF Moment respectively. And thanks to Kim Jeong for providing our favorite moment of the night, as he performed an interpretive dance with his “Hangover” co-star, Ed Helms, on piano. “El Tigre” got very Tigre for the performance.

We at Dave and Thomas find zombies to be a very appetizing idea. They’re kinda like the bacon of the horror genre, they can make about any crapfest you’re serving edible.

“What’s that? You have a crappy low/no budget horror movie you want us to watch? Uh… No thanks. Oh, it’s a zombie movie? Well, I’ll get some popcorn going.”

This very mentality is why we were particularly happy to learn that AMC had obtained the rights to adapt the undead-packed comic book, The Walking Dead, into a television series, with Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) helming the project. AMC has ordered the first six episodes of the first season, with plans to debut in October, 2010.

We’ll give you a moment to let that sink in.

A zombie television series for Halloween! Come October, fans of the biologically challenged may actually have access to weekly doses of brain nibbling. It’s all too much to believe.

Of course, the comic book is not all just rampant zombie attacks and blood orgies. The Walking Dead‘s story follows a small-town police officer and a band of survivors trying to make their way in a world overrun with zombies. A major point of the comic is the evolution of the characters and their personalities in the face of a zombie apocalypse.

The zombies are the slow moving, lurching variety, susceptible to violent brain trauma. Outside of the zombies, there are some particularly nasty villains (The Governor), who prove that no matter how bad a monster is, humans have the capacity to be worse. A theme found in many zombie movies such as 28 Days Later and any of the Romero films.

We feel relatively confident in AMC bringing a decent adaptation of the comic book to television. With their current line-up of original programing producing the critically beloved Mad Men and Breaking Bad, which is almost as addictive as the drug it portrays, we find it a little hard to bet against them right now.

A neat little short film called Pixels hit the internets about a month ago. If you missed it, it’s about classic 8-bit characters breaking out into the real world and wreaking havoc. Some of the notable characters making an appearance were Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and Frogger. Yeah, we know, sounds cool. Looks cool too.

Well Adam Sandler thinks the idea has merit beyond the internet. His production company, Happy Madison is looking into bringing the short film to the big screen. They’re working with the film’s creator, French filmmaker Patrick Jean, to adapt the idea into a feature-length action comedy.

Now, is there enough of an idea to turn two-and-a-half minutes into about 90 minutes? Possibly. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

But then again, since it is just starting the development stage, it’s just as likely the film could disappear. We’ll see.

For now we do have the short and that’s something at least. Enjoy.
