So if you are going to go hit up the new sci-fi/western movie Cowboys and Aliens (opening in theaters July 29th) just know going in that it is a movie based off of a graphic novel. No big deal there, right?
Well, the odd thing I learned this week is that the graphic novel itself was inspired by another piece of artwork. In particular, a Gary Larsen Far Side comic.
Wait,….what?
Take a look.

Well, you don’t see that everyday. In 2006, Platinum Studios published the 100-page graphic novel created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, with penciler Luciano Lima.
And this month we see the movie staring Daniel Craig (James Bond), Harrison Ford (The Frisco Kid), Sam Rockwell (Galaxy Quest) and Olivia Wilde (Year One) and directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man).
Here’s a look at the movie. A $140 million adaptation of a Far Side Cartoon!

Cowboys and Aliens is a cool movie, its based on a great novel, i like this movie, good job
You are wrong. It was based on the legend of the town of Absolution. The legend that aliens visited the western town in the 1800s and and alien is buried in the cemetery. Discovery Channel did a special on it. Far Side is probably a spoof on that legend. It made the town famous and kept them from being a ghost town. The Discovery Channel special was better than the movie.
Good catch. Didn’t know that
I self-published a 1995 16-page ashcan (xeroxed) comic book by the same title. In 2004 Scott Rosenberg of Platinum Studios paid me for the rights to the title and to change the name of my book to “Wayout West”, a 104-page full-color trade paperback compiling the first three issues is currently available on Amazon.com. Just type my name into the search bar.
