News erupted last week about the Syfy Channel announcing plans for another Galactica prequel, this one set 10 years into the first Cylon war.
To make way in the budget and lineup it looks like SyFy has decided there can only be one prequel series.
Caprica, the young series centered around the creation of the Cylons, was canceled after one season due to low ratings and, in my opinion, a huge lack of excitement from the BSG fanbase.
The show is gone as of now and the five remaining Caprica episodes will air in the first quarter of 2011, concluding the show’s series run.
It definitely lacked the punch of Battlestar but I wonder what it could have been if the show was given some time to develop but due to a slower storyline and a lack of likable characters, Caprica struggled to even break 1 million viewers in recent showings.
The show returned from hiatus trying to reshape its various problematic characters – Clarice was much less inept, Joseph stopped whining and embraced his family’s gangster roots, etc. – but there was still a lack of clear storytelling direction, and I kept having to convince myself to watch the episodes that were sitting on my DVR. That’s a good summary for the show that held a lot of promise. Personally, I never really got into the show and I was never happy with the way they rolled out the show with the pilot showing on DVD months before the series began.
It was kind of odd and I know they were trying to push it out fast to grab the fans attention during the BSG finale but I really think this tactic made the series lose some steam.
I’m happy at least they tried to do something different. It didn’t quite work but in awhile we’ll get another chance to see if they can kickstart the franchise. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome is in the works and it promises more SyFy and less soap opera.
