You most likely don’t know it, but you probably want to be this guy right now. His name is Carl Erik Rinsch. He is a protege of Ridley Scott, an accomplished commercial director for Scott’s company RSA, and rumored to be dating Scott’s daughter. He is currently set to direct the remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and something called 47 Ronin. He was also originally tapped to direct the next Alien movie with Ridley Scott acting as producer, till the studios insisted on Ridley’s veteran hand helming the ship (that one probably stung a little).
And the icing on the cake of this rocketing career?
Mr Rinsch recently directed a short film for Phillips Cinema’s Parallel Lines called The Gift. The Gift is a very well made sci-fi thriller that was released about a week ago, and has already started blowing up across the internets. And the major studios are already starting to circle at the smell of new blood, or in this case, a new idea. The feature (apparently called Small) based on the short finds itself in a bidding war between studios hoping to catch the same lightning in a bottle that graced District 9. In fact, some on the internet are already calling it the next District 9. Whether or not this will bear out to be true is still way to early to call now, but there are some major studios (Warner Bros. and Fox for example), who are willing to bet on it.
The short is certainly cool and you should really check it out below. It definitely has all the trappings of a great sci-fi film: robots, chase scenes, CG, wild technology and anonymously uniformed enforcers with full helmets. Take a look and decide for yourself if you think it has the legs to be the next District 9 or maybe something better. Maybe next time we will be describing the next sci-fi short turned feature as the next Small. Or, then again, this could all just collapse and go away. Who knows?
