Flight of the ConchordsIt’s a sad day in television land.  One of our favorite shows, HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, has announced that it will not return for a 3rd Season.  New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-comedy band took a little time to decide about the future of the show and sadly announced this tragic news on their website:

“we’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.

The Kiwis struck a chord with their goofy HBO series that routinely mixed songs and comedy into a storyline about a couple of foreign chaps out of their element in New York City. The comic stylings of the Conchords were brought to life with their retro wardrobes and surreal sets. There were only 22 episodes that we will have to cherish but we are not left totally out in the cold.  The band is still together even if the show is grounded.

In thinking of a nice tribute for the boys we had a hard time pinning down a favorite from all the choices.  There are just so many. You can easily point out more popular songs like Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros or Robots (Humans are dead). Maybe even Business Time or You’re So Beautiful or If You’re Into It.

What about Sugar Lumps? Well, they are all great and there are plenty more to choose from but one does stand out for us just a bit more than the rest.

“Hurt Feelings,” [A.K.A. "Tears of a Rapper"] is a perfect example of their quirky genre-melding style of music and Fellini-esque cinematography. The song originates in Season Two, Episode Three, when the Kiwis become afraid after one of their song dissed a large number of rappers.

Feeling a violent reprisal, we are treated to “Hurt Feelings” which incorporates the usual Conchords great transition into a musical number by having the set turn into the music video. Later in the episode we see a nice arch back to the song as other members of the cast react to being taunted by their rivals, the Australians.

It’s a nice touch going from a goofy rap song to a subtle tribute to “Wise Up” from the movie Magnolia.
