District 9 Short ‘Alive In Joburg’
The hottest thing in movies right now is the relatively small “District 9″ sci-fi flick owning the box office this weekend.
South African born director Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson teamed up to create a fantastic movie centered around aliens living as second-class citizens in a third world country.
It all began a few years back when Blomkamp and Jackson’s “Halo” movie adaptation was tanked and they moved on to adapt Blomkamp’s short, “Alive in Joburg,” into a full-length movie. If “District 9″ is any indication on how Blomkamp can direct, we imagine he will have a fantastic career. His abilities behind the camera are outstanding and the “District 9″ flick is a captivating and fantastic ride we hope you get time to watch.
If you can’t make the theaters to view the full-length version you can catch the 6 minute short “Alive in Joburg” which is the basis for the film. Sharlto Copley, who stars in “District 9″ as the lead Wikus van der Merwe, makes an appearance in “Joburg” about 3 minutes in. A fun little tidbit, Copley also helped produced the “Joburg” short.
