Phallic symbols as part of ancient rituals are pretty common in many places in the world — not just Japan. (In India, it is called the lingam, for example.)

As for the Japanese “kepp”ing it on their own island — well, they did certainly *try*, but Admiral Perry and his Black Ships kinda put the kibosh on that.

Flourecents lamps and CFL’s shouldn’t be broken because the mercury will be released. Mercury is very toxic and can develop cancer.
