Author: We can’t even begin to imagine the health problems come from smashing fluorescent tubes over somebody until they are bloody. Besides all the funky stuff in the tubes we bet the small shards of glass must hurt like a son-of-a-gun.

Phallic symbols as part of ancient rituals are pretty common in many places in the world — not just Japan. (In India, it is called the lingam, for example.)
As for the Japanese “kepp”ing it on their own island — well, they did certainly *try*, but Admiral Perry and his Black Ships kinda put the kibosh on that.
