Tennessee Vols Football Coach Lane Kiffin is off to a great start with a solid signing of recruits despite only being on the job for a few months. After replacing Phillip Fulmer at the end of the last season, Kiffin cleaned house and gradually brought in an All-star staff of assistant coaches including the legendary Monte Kiffin, his father.
The Vols landed 8 4-star recruits and one 5-star recruit. In that batch of stars are 2 players including Pahokee, Fla.’s Nu’keese Richardson who decided against signing with rival Florida. Janzen Jackson was a big surprise after passing on his original commitment to LSU to sign with UT. Jackson, a 5-star recruit and the #2 cornerback in the nation by Rivals.com, no doubt will fit in nicely next to next year’s Heismann winner, Eric Berry.
While boasting about the signings, Coach Kiffin showed his youth by calling out rivals Florida and Alabama and even claiming that Florida’s coach Urban Meyer violated recruiting rules by calling Nu’keese repeatedly on his cell phone while the young man was visiting the Vols campus.
“I’m going to turn Florida in right now in front of you,” Kiffin told his receptive audience. “Nu’Keese (Richardson) was here on campus (on his recruiting visit) and his phone kept ringing.
“One of our coaches said, ‘Nu’Keese, who’s that?’ He said, ‘Urban Meyer (Florida’s coach).’
“Just so you know, when a recruit is on another campus, you can’t call him. I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn’t get him (Richardson signed with UT after committing to the Gators).”
Florida didn’t take Kiffin’s comments lightly. It released a statement from athletic director Jeremy Foley on Thursday afternoon.
Florida and the SEC spoke up today to explain that Meyer did not violate any rules and the SEC even reprimanded Kiffin today. Cue the video of Kiffin slowly inserting his foot into his mouth…
